Adufe and the songbook of Montsanto

Joana Negrâo

Joana Negrâo

Portuguese singer, lyricist and instrumentalist, Joana Negrão develops a career that intertwines research and artistic creation, with special attention to intangible heritage and the less visible expressions of Portuguese oral tradition. Her work places at its center the ritual, feminine and collective dimension of singing.

For nearly two decades she was part of projects such as Dazkarieh and Seiva, exploring traditional music from a contemporary perspective.

In her current stage, she performs as A Cantadeira, a solo project in which the voice becomes the absolute axis of creation: recorded and layered in real time, it builds organic soundscapes where rhythm, harmony and texture emerge exclusively from singing. Her album Tecelã (2024) was critically acclaimed, and in 2025 she presented the project at the Festival da Canção, reaffirming her commitment to a living and evolving tradition.
