The voice is the oldest instrument and a central pillar in traditional music. On the Iberian Peninsula, there is a rich repertoire that, for centuries, has been passed down orally, from mothers to daughters, from neighbors to friends, giving rise to countless techniques and melismas that continue to move us today. And to keep singing to life, this year we are fortunate to have Anna Ferrer and Andrea Montero leading the singing group.
Anna comes from Menorca to bring us popular melodies from her island, which are generally shared with the other Balearic Islands, especially Mallorca. She will combine a repertoire used for dancing jotas and fandangos with the rural songs that were traditionally sung to make agricultural work a little lighter.
Andrea will introduce us to the Galician vocal technique, characterized by its intensity, energy, and deep emotional expression. Through a collective practical immersion, we will explore different pillars of Galician oral tradition, such as muiñeiras and maneos, traveling through various regions of the community. In addition to focusing on vocal technique, we will also learn to integrate voices with the rhythmic accompaniment of the tambourine. It is important to bring a tambourine!
This will be a space to connect with our roots, discover the power of collective singing, and reclaim the role of women in the dissemination and preservation of traditional music.
